Furnace Replacement
Furnace Replacement for Rhode Island Homes
An old furnace, a bill that keeps climbing or a house that never quite warms up. Here is how to tell whether it is time, and what to compare.
Signs It Is Time
When to Start Comparing Replacements
ENERGY STAR lists these signs that heating and cooling equipment may be due for replacement.
- Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old
- The equipment needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are going up
- Some rooms in your home are too hot or too cold
- The heating system is noisy
What Efficiency Means
Reading an AFUE Rating
AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, tells you how much of a fuel's heat ends up warming your home instead of being lost.
ENERGY STAR says furnaces that earn its label have higher AFUE ratings and more efficient blower motors than standard models. A higher rating means less of the fuel you pay for is wasted.
Your Options
Three Ways to Go From Here
The right choice depends on your house, how it is heated now and what you want from it.
Repair What You Have
Sometimes a repair is the sensible call. We lay out what it would take so you can compare it with a new system.
Replace With a New Furnace
Forced-air heat through existing ductwork is a common fit when the ducts are in good shape.
Switch to a Heat Pump
One system for heating and cooling, ducted or ductless. Rebates may apply. See heat pumps and rebates.

Furnace Questions
How Old Is Too Old for a Furnace?
ENERGY STAR lists a furnace or boiler more than 15 years old as one sign it may be time to compare replacements, and frequent repairs with rising energy bills as another. Age alone does not decide it, which is why we look at the whole system.
Should I Choose a Heat Pump or a Furnace?
It depends on your home, how it is heated now and what incentives apply. We compare the options with you during the estimate.
How Should a New Furnace Be Sized?
Proper size matters for efficiency and comfort. ENERGY STAR says the contractor should calculate your home's heating and cooling loads using the ACCA Manual J method or an equivalent. Ask every contractor how they size a system.
Do I Need New Ductwork?
Not always. If you have ducts, ask whether they will be checked for damage and leaks before a new system goes on them.
Are There Rebates for a New System?
Programs, amounts and eligibility change, so we confirm current details before you decide. See rebates.
Is the Estimate Free?
Yes. Estimates are free and come with no obligation.
