Mini-Splits

Ductless Mini-Splits for Rhode Island Homes

Heating and cooling without ductwork. Mini-splits fit older homes, additions and the one room that never feels right.

How They Work

An Indoor Unit and an Outdoor Unit

A mini-split puts a head unit on an interior wall or ceiling, connected to a unit outside. Some systems use more than one head unit.

A mini-split heat pump can heat in winter and cool in summer. Some ductless units only cool, so check which kind is being quoted. With no ducts, there is no ductwork to install.

Good Fits

Where a Mini-Split Makes Sense

ENERGY STAR lists these as good fits for ductless systems.

01

Homes Without Ducts

Older homes heated by radiators or baseboard that have never had central air conditioning.

02

Costly Electric Heat

Homes heated with electric baseboard, wall heaters or electric radiant heat that would also benefit from cooling.

03

Additions and Outbuildings

A shed, barn, garage or addition where extending ductwork or system capacity is difficult.

Before You Decide

What Goes Into the Decision

  • Where each head unit would go, and how air will move in the room
  • How many head units your layout calls for
  • Where the lines can run between the indoor and outdoor units
  • How it compares with central AC or a ducted heat pump
  • Cold-weather performance for a Rhode Island winter. See heat pumps

Compare

Central Air or Ductless

Both cool a home. If your home has good ductwork, central air may be the simpler fit. If it does not, a mini-split avoids the ducts altogether.

Mini-Split Questions

Can I Add Air Conditioning Without Ducts?

Yes. Ductless mini-splits are made for that. Where units would go depends on your layout, and the estimate is where we work that out.

Do Mini-Splits Heat as Well as Cool?

Mini-split heat pumps do. They move heat into your home in winter and out of it in summer. Some ductless units only cool, so check which kind is being quoted.

How Many Head Units Do I Need?

It depends on your layout and which rooms you want to condition. A single outdoor unit can serve more than one head unit. We recommend a setup after we see the space.

Are There Rebates for Mini-Splits?

Programs, amounts and eligibility change, so we confirm current details before you decide. See rebates.

Is the Estimate Free?

Yes. Estimates are free and come with no obligation.
